Ebola or Genocide? West Africa and the Hybrid Eclipse of November 2013

In his Tetrabiblos Ptolemy laid out a methodology for analyzing eclipses within the ancient divinatory and omen traditions that has been considered both encyclopedic and scientific, underpinned by models of planetary theory and explanation that kept cosmologists and astrologers busy reading charts and predicting cycles; judicial, meteorological, and genethlialogical, for centuries beyond. This methodology and its lasting effect summarized for examination and application by Dr. Ben Dykes in his recent (2013) book, Astrology of the World I: The Ptolemaic Inheritance is a template for understanding and applying the originations and subsequent innovations Ptolemy inspired.
As pointed out by Dykes in his introduction to eclipses, ancient cultures have been done a disservice by being portrayed as fearful observers of celestial omen. Babylonian eclipse records describe these ‘omens’ were not only predicted, but useful for information as well.
By the time of Ptolemy (1st c.), astrology was a varied science in cultural practice and application. Eclipses were judged as weather indicators, as well as indicators of shifts in religion and politics, each with its own kind of ‘weather’.
In an effort to analyze the Hybrid Solar Eclipse of November 3 2013 within the perspective of “The Ptolemaic Inheritance” there are points unique to each eclipse reading that must be considered, including but not limited to;
When initially examining the charts relevant to the eclipse in November of 2013 I was drawn to the conflict in the Central African Republic (C.A.R) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.) for two reasons: First the path of observable totality was very thin owing to the hybrid nature of the eclipse, the eclipse hit landfall in Gabon and stretched across the Congo, DRC, Kenya and into Somalia. As testified conflict areas these seemed localized indicators of the eclipse in Scorpio attended by Saturn and Mars. Second, the eclipse of November 3 2013 was a part of Saros cycle 143, the previous eclipse in the cycle being October 2 1959, which drew a similar eclipse path from the United States to Africa and could be considered indicative of the Congo Crisis (as pointed out by Dykes).
While examining the relevant charts in late 2013 it seemed that the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction cycles would need to be considered for real judgment on political upheaval in West Africa (extending to the Eastern Coast) and while gathering research in February 2014 for that separate work the first indications of an Ebola breakout were being reported.
Horoscope Chart for November 3 2013 Hybrid Solar Eclipse – Greatest Eclipse Point – Atlantic Ocean
Using the horoscope chart drawn for the middle or actual conjunction of the Sun and Moon with the coordinates reported by Fred Espenak, NASA’s GSFC, (03 N 30, 11 W 41) calculated with Kairon astrology software for OSX gives a rising degree of 10 Aquarius, with the eclipse occurring at 11 Scorpio within 4 degrees of the MC at 16 Scorpio. Mercury and Saturn are with the conjunction (under the beams?) in Scorpio at 07 and 13 degrees respectively. The ruler of this stellia is Mars, in the 8th sign Virgo (11 degrees), a human image on the house of death. Countries and cities with these signs and degrees prominent in the annual ingresses and relevant radix charts will be affected.
Of the configuration above, Sahl bin Bishr (c. 9th century) had this to say (Astrology of the World I, p. 362);
“And if Mars was the ruler of the management of the eclipse and its bound, it perpetrates evil and corruption from dryness. And if his indication was in people…a disease from fever and heat, and the effusion of blood.”
Dykes summarized the breakdown of eclipse delineation and prediction when producing an example under Ptolemy’s instructions, following that template at the point of greatest eclipse on the path of totality the November 3 2013 eclipse lasted 5.4 hours. While not all of the eclipse was total, local obscuration was such that by tradition roughly 5 years 5 months will mark the timeline of the effects of the eclipse in those places where totality was achieved.
The eclipse is 5 degrees from the Midheaven and within the middle third of the heavens. As this arrangement is similar to the one provided by Dykes I quote him for clarity and brevity,
“According to Ptolemy’s instructions, the effects must begin within 1 year. Because the eclipse is near the Midheaven or in the middle third of heaven, then the effects should begin within 4-8 months (the middle third of one year), and the intensification of them should likewise be within the middle third of the total time indicated…”

Using this data to unpack the expanded points mentioned prior provides specific information for the delineation including countries affected and testimonies to look for in upcoming ingress and lunation charts.
The length of the eclipse and its formulated effect in years and months is well documented in the extant historical astrological traditions. While Ptolemy’s reported method allows countries away from the eclipse path to be affected by zodiacal sympathy with the eclipse astrological disposition, this chart is drawn for the middle point of the eclipse along its central path which was just miles from the Sierra Leone and Liberian coastlines in the Atlantic Ocean.

The similarities between eclipse path and epidemic dispersion are striking. If proximity of path were an indication of localization of events I would be lead to present Jacksonville Florida, Savannah Georgia, or Charleston South Carolina as likely places where Ebola cases would emerge in the United States.
However, with Dallas and New York as initially affected cities, localization of events may be more aligned with zodiacal sympathy. It could be stated that these potentially infectious carriers entered US ports (Washington DC and New York) within the slim path of visibility for an annual eclipse already in progress at sunrise, though the maximum eclipse (and thus timing chart) had happened prior to sunrise.
From Guinea, where the epidemic began, the eclipse view was total is some parts of the country. Using Conakry for the chart and a local eclipse length of 3.28 hours the timeline matches estimates promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), West African health officials, and Doctors Without Borders. With a similar time frame for when the event should begin (within 4 months), the length of time between intensification and abatement of the effects is roughly 12 months. Lord of the Year: Jupiter rising in Cancer or the Sun in Aries/10th
The discussion of who should be the Lord of the Year will be varied among traditional astrologers. Two Exalted planets in the angles in an applying square make bullying candidates. The Sun is in a Superior Square to Jupiter and both are within 5 degrees of their respective cusps. With a Diurnal chart I am inclined to give Lordship to the Sun, though Jupiter is strong and will remain Exalted in the rising sign through the next ingress, making him the Lord of Summer. Either significator portends an uplifting year, power and opportunity supported by initiative from the ruling class and dignified persons. There will be some struggle for all parties involved, two powerful parties will compete for prominence, a public figure will contend with a scholar. The spring and summer will be filled with opportunistic displays of abundance despite the common peoples’ suffering. Spending will increase, foreign investments will rise and we may see the embargo significant trade restrictions lifted from Cuba before next spring.
Significator of the King: Sun in Aries/10th
The King is strong in the year. He pushes forward with his own objectives and initiatives with some objections from the People, who will forgive when granted reprieve from the Laws. He will be opposed publicly by a foreign nation under the rule of Capricorn, though only in words and ideas.
His allies will be seen among his enemies, though they lack the strength to overcome.
The Malefics are Retrograde. Mars is the Lord of the Luminaries. Venus indicates Death in the Year
The People: The Moon is ruler of the Asc and general indicator of the common people. The Moon is in detriment in Scorpio/5th separating from an 8th House Venus to Saturn in Scorpio. There may be a raise in deaths among women in the nation. The People will be saddened by the death of a strong matron. Perhaps a soldier or politician, she will have been an intellectual and opinionated. This will push some into depression. In response to their depression the People will seek occult and destructive pleasures. The common and the poor will suffer and some disease will become prominent through June and may have lasting effects until the Libra Ingress. Turbulent and toxic waters affect those living in the North.
Jupiter rises in Cancer >5deg from the Asc. The People will have a social burden lifted from them. Justice will be applied and the dignified will rejoice, this may occur after the Cancer Ingress, but the discussion is happening now. Laws may be lightened and magnates will mingle with the People. Christianity will rise among the masses, as will Philanthropy. Mystics will move among the aristocratic. The People may produce a Spiritual Teacher.
These effects will be seen, heard, and felt among the learned and the opportunistic mostly.

Foreign and Domestic relations are strained. There will be vicious debates in public buildings and spaces. The King debates with Exalted Public Figures.

Foreign Nations are corrupt in the year. They offer little assistance to the People of the United States and remain embroiled in many internal conflicts. (see relevant International Ingresses) Both Malefics are retrograde indicating frustrated efforts, Mars is in fall in the 10th from the 7th opposed to the Sun in the 10th. War will continue to be seen in many lands, allies will combat with each other. This will be felt in those countries where Mars or Saturn are rising or culminating in the Ingress.
Mercury – Business and Commerce will be given to over-promotion and marketing. There may be fortune in this as concepts become more valuable than material resources. The youth will seek religion and spiritual expression.
Nationwide Harvests will be Lower than Average. Tourism will increase, many patents will be filed toward greater innovation.
Weather Report
The spring weather will be moderate and pleasant with a much needed return of moisture in the air and rain for the land. This will reach an abundance of waters in the North and Northwest, to the point of saturation and will ebb-and-flow through June. There will be an abundance of water, misplaced, mis-handled and at inappropriate times and places. I predict much rain in the early Summer months with increased heat in August/September, promoting a return to fire and smoke in the West. There will be deaths from frigid winds and airs in the winter months following the Capricorn Ingress.

While it may be tempting to read this chart as the nativity of a star musical performer that would be too easy, and as a full reading it may be mixing up adjectives that will only be relevant during certain time periods. As a researcher into ancient astrological predictive methods possessing a state recognized birth certificate is a rare opportunity to apply technique to a ‘clean slate’ as it were, by inference offering predictions on one’s Fate, in this particular case the seed of a (in?)famous American couple, using techniques applied and passed down by those Historical Astrologers reading the nativities of Princes and Sultans, Queens and Rich Nobles.
Americans have a tradition of resisting notions of royalty, we have produced a similar class of citizen by splicing ‘Fame’ into the Royal DNA; Stardom. And while Stardom is far more capricious than bloodlines when passing on a royal name I feel that the circumstances of North West’s Horoscope will be subject of discussion for sometime among the American societal prerogative.
Contrary to the modern perception of astrology, the sign the Sun occupied at the time of birth or ‘Sun Sign’, is not the sole signification of a person, their profession and their personality type. The rising sign, First House, or simply Ascendant, is primary when delineating the physical life, inherent skills and inclinations, Primary Motivation.
The Ascendant is influenced and affected by ‘aspects’ from the seven visible planets combined with the position of the Rising Sign’s ruler.
The combination of these influences and conditions displayed in the particular Astral Arrangement represented in the Birth Chart (also; Natal Chart, Nativity) offer elemental information relating to the Humors of the body and the Temperament of the Soul. Since ancient times the health of an individual was first assessed by this criteria and this base information regarding physical makeup and constitution was foundational to astrological delineation and prediction.
Gemini rises; a masculine air-sign with give-and-take mutable activity Gemini motivates the integration and dissemination of information, absorbing and redistributing knowledge. This will be focused in this chart though ambitious projections of self, public displays and social activism. This is determined by an interesting stellium consisting of Mars, the Sun & Jupiter, with Mars just outside the rays of the Sun. Many planets associated with the 1st House can drive a person in various directions, here there will be a bombastic flair added to all things attempted, though not always with the dedication to see things through to completion. The Sun is closest to the Ascendant, indicating a Solar Planetary Type in a predominately motive chart arrangement underlying a sanguine temperament.
This indicates an Urbanite. Humanitarian in worldview she will seek public roles or leadership opportunities. Easily lured by trends and fads, there will be many manifestations of North West.
Gemini is a human sign, indicating good looks as the ruler of the sign Mercury is conjunct Venus in Cancer, gifting an ever youthful appearance. Jupiter inclines a full figure and during years with a strong Jupiter influence there may be fluctuations in growth. The influence of Mars is athletic, though in an air sign I would interpret active engagement less physical though exerting and demanding on the senses (Gymnastics or Ballet…Pilot?).
She will be joyful and expressive with a presence that demands attention. This will make her an excellent promoter or manager, especially of other artists or performers.
The intellect will prove active and inquisitive regardless, Mercury as the ruler of the Ascendant produces a love of knowledge and information connected with Mars makes the Activist, a champion of causes and missions. This would hold true with the Sun/Jupiter conjunction in the 1st House.
Mercury and the Moon have a certain reception between them and this creates a healthy relationship between thought and emotion. A tight square between the Moon and Mars makes haste so that she may be pragmatic in thought, though emotional in speech and expression. She will decide what she thinks and feels before speaking her thoughts and emotions, though may lose control of when and where she speaks them.
Vocational/Profession – North’s talents are represented in the Gemini stellium discussed above, how these talents apply professionally will depend on the strength of the planets involved and their objective manifestation through Solar Returns (or Revolutions as the Ancients called them). Mars, Venus & Mercury are the Traditional indicators of profession (Warriors/Builders, Artisans & Merchants) and of the three Mars is the most prominent in the rising-sign, though Mercury has the most dignity in position and Venus is the almuten of the 10th House (MC, the House of Action/Profession/Recognition).

The Mutability of the Chart indicates many different avenues of expression which can dilute real potential.
Fame and Recognition will be fair to high with both Luminaries (Sun & Moon) in angular houses, the Sun in a masculine sign, the Moon in a Feminine. The Sun is attended by an angular Jupiter and the Moon an angular Mars; further marks of notoriety through philanthropy and activism. She will not seek out fame directly, it will be brought to her and how this is assimilated while developing will remain to be seen.
It would not take all the effort of a wise astrologer to calculate and read a chart of a medieval courtesan to determine the wealth of a child born to rich parents. However, how that wealth is distributed by the child and whether the child adds to or depletes from that wealth through childhood to adulthood is a matter of intricate astrological technique.
When determining the source and agency of wealth or financial substance the Ancients sought a planet (or some astrological) in the chart that could be representative of a ‘Financial Significator’, determined toward finances in general.
A quick look at the 2nd House reveals Venus and Mercury separating from conjunction in Cancer, the sign of the Moon. The same reception between Mercury and the Moon mentioned above will connect Family money intrinsically to her own personal finances. She will be comfortable among the rich and powerful. Venus in Cancer is impulsive emotional shopping sessions, though the Moon in Virgo rules the position; numbers will be managed toward ambitious business opportunities.
North West will acquire unexpected good fortune without much labor, though it may originate from a place which she might not like. Regardless, she will be successful in her own acquisition of wealth; In promotion, philanthropy, pubic appearance & redirecting seed finances. I decipher these considerations from what the Historical Astrologers had to say about these particular Planetary Alignments. Not always relevant in a (Post)Modern context, there are underlying elemental qualities that produce considerations used to relate astral arrangement to earthly events.
For example;
“Substance will be gained by the discovery of crude gold, or things not thought of before”
The “discovery of crude gold” is not something that happens often and the context might leave some to think of mining. The definition of crude is ‘In a natural or raw state, not yet processed or refined’, what is not yet refined in this context is also something “not thought of before” which means she will be responsible for producing something new worth its weight in gold. This will include family members, friends or familiars, negotiations, accommodations and collections.
This reads to me as less a full-time Musician of Performer and more of a Manager, Promoter or Producer.
Without making sweeping statements about the nature of a young woman’s future relations it would be remiss to attempt a full astrological reading without considering judgments on Marriage/Children/Family.
The Sun is conjunct the Ascendant, the ruler of the 7th House is in the 1st House; She may marry or be involved romantically with a performer or public figure, though the chart configuration suggests she will possess more fame and money than her partners. Many suitors will seek her out (Jupiter), there may be two major relationships (Mutable Sign on the 7th House cusp), one will be early and frivolous, the other later and more serious and respectable.
She will relate notions of Family to substance and financial stability. She will be closer with the Women than the Men. The House of Children (5th) is ruled by Venus with Libra on the cusp, though Saturn is exaltation ruler of Libra and is in the 5th House/Scorpio. A fertile water sign, Scorpio, though Saturn is a solitary planet and usually indicates no children, though many 1st House planets can contribute fertility as well. (0-3 children)
Spiritual Life – North West’s 9th House is not particularly active. Aquarius on the cusp suggests Humanitarian Sciences as a path to higher knowledge where she may develop a humanistic worldview. Saturn in Scorpio suggests psychoanalysis or behavioral science. She may also be privy to joining local groups that offer opportunity for community service and outreach.
The Ruler of the Chart is Mercury; a rational spirit whose Day is Wednesday, Colors range between sky-blue and storm-cloud, a Sacred Mercurial Space should be offered for those that have this Planet as Chart Ruler.
